Comments on "Shallow gas off the Rhone prodelta, Gulf of Lions" by Garcia-Garcia et al. (2006) Marine Geology 234 (215-231) - Reply ArchiMer
Garcia Garcia, A; Orange, D; Lorenson, T; Radakovitch, O; Tesi, T; Miserocchi, S; Berne, Serge; Friend, P; Nittrouer, C; Normand, Alain.
We really appreciate the interest and comments regarding our manuscript. We hope we address all the lingering issues in this reply. This also gives us the opportunity of publishing an update on our dataset that will complete the original manuscript (see Table 1). We have followed the author pattern in our answers: I-Gas sampling procedure, 2-Reported gas concentrations results, 3-General remarks, 4-Conclusions. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Impact of river channel shifts on tetraether lipids in the Rhône prodelta (NW Mediterranean): Implication for the BIT index as an indicator of palaeoflood events ArchiMer

We tested the applicability of the BIT (branched and isoprenoid tetraether) index as a proxy for palaeoflood events in the river-dominated continental margin of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean). We compared the concentrations of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (br GDGTs) and crenarchaeol in suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected downstream in the Rhône River, as well as in surface sediments and a ca. 8m piston core from the Rhône prodelta. The core covered the last 400 yr, with four distinct intervals recording the river influence under natural and man-induced shifts in four main channels of the river mouth (Bras de Fer, Grand Rhône, Pégoulier, and Roustan). The results indicate that there are mixed sources of br GDGTs and...

Impact of winter storms on sediment erosion in the Rhone River prodelta and fate of sediment in the Gulf of Lions (North Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Verney, Romaric; Le Hir, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Charmasson, Sabine.
In this study a three-dimensional sediment transport model was developed. The model accounts for both current and wave forcing on the sediment and was implemented over the Gulf of Lions. A two-way nesting technique was used to focus on the Rhone River prodelta which is considered as a sink for riverine sediment. In addition, to understand the resuspension of trapped sediment over the Rhone prodelta, an in situ experiment, called SCOPE, was conducted during the winter 2007/2008. The experiment consisted of measuring hydro-sedimentary parameters using a mooring station comprising a current profiler (ADCP) and an altimeter (acoustic transducer) located in the eastern part of the Rhone prodelta. The three-dimensional transport model was validated using these...

Le système des carbonates influencé par la diagenèse précoce dans les sédiments côtiers méditerranéens en lien avec l’acidification des océans ArchiMer
Rassmann, Jens.
Continental shelves are key regions for the global carbon cycle and particularly exposed to ocean acidification. A large part of organic matter (OM) of continental and marine origin is mineralized in estuarine sediments following oxic and anoxic pathways. This mineralization produces dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) leading to acidification of the bottom waters. Anoxic mineralization can produce total alkalinity (TA) that can contribute to buffer bottom water pH and increase the CO2 storage capacity of seawater. Measurements in the sediments of the Rhone River prodelta showed that anoxic mineralization, especially sulfate reduction, are the major pathways of OM mineralization and create high DIC and TA fluxes. Land derived OM is mineralized close to the...

Live−dead comparison of benthic foraminiferal faunas from the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean): Development of a proxy for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions ArchiMer
Goineau, A.; Fontanier, Christophe; Mojtahid, M.; Fanget, Anne-sophie; Bassetti, M-a.; Berne, Serge; Jorissen, F..
Dead benthic foraminiferal faunas (> 150 μm) from the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean) were analysed at 41 stations (15–100 m water depth) sampled in June 2005 and September 2006, and compared to the living faunas investigated during previous studies at the same stations. The comparison between dead and living assemblages enhances the understanding of taphonomic processes that may modify the composition of the dead faunas in this area. We observed a loss of individuals from living to dead assemblages of species characterised by a fairly fragile test and therefore more prone to fragmentation or dissolution (e.g., Bolivina alata, Quinqueloculina tenuicollis). Allochthonous dead and/or live specimens may be transported to some parts of the...

Shallow gas off the Rhone prodelta, Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Garcia Garcia, Ana; Orange, D; Lorenson, T; Radakovitch, O; Tesi, T.; Miserocchi, S; Berne, Serge; Friend, P.l.; Nittrouer, C; Normand, Alain.
Sediment cores acquired in 2004 off the Rhone prodelta show consistent anomalous methane concentrations of up to 87,440 ppm. Methane compositional and isotopic data support a biogenic origin, although there are a few sites that show strongly depleted delta C-13 values (-53%o PDB) suggesting a mixed source for the gas (biogenic and thermogenic). Anomalous methane concentrations (samples with more than 90 ppm) are discussed and integrated with organic carbon data, sedimentary rates and ADCP profiles. Highest gas concentrations were found directly off the river mouth (20-40 m water depth) and where the IFREMER models point to the thickest accumulation (> 2 m) in response to the Rhone flood event. In areas unaffected by the high flux of organic matter and...
